West Michigan Galaxy FC Kicks Cancer 2024
  • West Michigan Galaxy Strong

Blood cancer has had a devastating impact on families right within our own soccer community.  Let’s join together and show we are West Michigan Galaxy Strong in the fight to end childhood leukemia!

  • MADDIE STRONG

Maddie Lockwood, leukemia diagnosis in 2019.

The Lockwood Family, consisting of Aaron, Kristin, Maddie, and Cammie, are integral members of Caledonia and the Soccer Community.  Cammie is a former Cats FC player and Kristin Lockwood is a former Cats FC Board Member.

From the age of 10 to 12 ½, Maddie endured two and a half years of what seemed like endless chemotherapy treatments aimed at curing her cancer. However, these treatments simultaneously wreaked havoc on her young body.  Rather than enjoying school and dance with her friends, she was suffering from hair loss, nausea, vomiting, mouth sores, muscle weakness and broken bones.  The family had to watch Maddie endure unimaginable pain, isolation, and fear, feeling powerless, with only prayers and Maddie’s positivity providing them hope.

Throughout their journey, the family felt blessed with love, prayers, and support that allowed them to focus on Maddie’s fight. The soccer community, in particular, extended their loving support and embraced Cammie during these challenging times, demonstrating the power of unity and compassion. The family knew that once Maddie rang the remission bell, they would find a way to give back and help others. In 2023, Maddie was selected to be LLS’s 2023 West Michigan Honored Hero, and in 2024, her dad, Aaron Lockwood, accepted his nomination as a Visionary of the Year Candidate.

The Lockwood family is one of many in our community affected by blood cancers.   Their battles, along with countless others, serve as a stark reminder of the urgency and importance of supporting initiatives aimed at finding a cure.
